A Weeping Christian: When Faith and Grief Collide

Hope Springs Eternal

Hope… such a little word for such a huge concept.

This life can just leave us feeling as though it is one always going to be one long, dark winter-dry, gray, bare, and bitter. But then, we catch a tiny glimpse of spring with its new life appearing. I notice the tree in our front yard with tiny blooms starting to peek out, and I’m reminded of the saying that hope springs eternal. It’s fitting that the word “spring” is there- this season of renewed life always reminds me how easy it can be to let go of the hope we grasp so tightly.

The bible speaks about hope many times; I know that God, in his infinite wisdom, was fully aware how badly we would need it.

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure…” Hebrews 6:19″

“Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.” Psalms 62:5

“The Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.” Psalms 147:11

“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31

Spring also brings with it the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection from the grave. This is truly where we can look back and lay claim to our hope. I imagine what it must have been like for Mary, John, Peter, and all the other disciples to see the one they thought would save them crucified. How they must have grieved not only for him as a son and friend but also for humanity. I’m sure they were so confused and bewildered at the turn of events that brought Jesus from being hailed as the king as he entered the city to him dying on a cruel cross. And then, after three days, to find out that Jesus was alive… what a powerful moment that must have been.

Hope does spring eternal for me because I fully believe Jesus conquered death. God’s word tells us we are not to grieve as those who don’t believe (I Thess. 4:13), and hope is the only way we are able to accomplish that.

“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1

“I have this hope as an anchor for my soul,
through every storm, I will hold to you…
There is hope in the promise of the cross,
You gave everything to save the world you love,
And this hope is an anchor for my soul,
Our God will stand…unshakable.
Your name is higher…your name is greater,
All my hope is in you.
Your word unfailing, your promise unshaken,
All my hope is in you.” Anchor by Hillsong
